Credit Through Testing
At Butler, you can earn credits through programs like AP, IB, or CLEP, getting a head start on your college degree.
Upon admission to the University, students should ensure their scores are sent to the Office of Registration and Records. Credits earned through these programs can be applied to major requirements or used as electives, subject to departmental discretion.
Additionally, transfer credits may fulfill Butler Core requirements, as long as they align with the learning objectives of the specific Core area. For more information, visit the Core Curriculum website.
College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Program allows you to earn college credit and advanced placement while in high school through AP college-level courses and exams. College Board offers AP exams each May and evaluates students’ proficiency based on a 5-point scale. Review our list of AP exam scores you need to earn credit at Ball State.
How do I submit my AP scores to Butler?
If you designate Butler as your AP score recipient, your scores will be automatically sent in July. Each report includes scores for all AP exams taken, unless you request otherwise. You can check your AP credit online if you submitted scores in your sophomore or junior years. If Butler wasn’t listed, contact AP Services at 212-632-1780 to request your official score report (Butler’s code is 1073).
The International Baccalaureate (IB) program offers college-level courses to high school students. Depending on their performance in IB exams, students may receive college credit or advanced placement at universities and colleges worldwide.

Departmental Advanced Placement
A student who has not attempted to qualify for credit under these programs may be placed in an advanced course if the department head or senior faculty member in that area is satisfied that the student can handle the work. A student who wishes to receive credit for the course or courses bypassed should consult the appropriate dean and department chair or designated faculty member. Upon their joint recommendation, credit may be awarded on the basis of the student’s performance in the advanced course.
