PA Admission FAQs
What is the size of each cohort of the Butler PA Program?
We enroll 75 students in each cohort annually.
When does the program start each year?
The Butler PA Program starts with the first summer session each year. Typically the second Monday in May.
Can I work while in the Butler PA Program?
Butler PA Students are not encouraged to work during the program. Classes can be scheduled anytime Monday-Friday between 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Students should also plan additional time for studying outside of these class times.
Can I be a part-time student in the PA Program?
No, all students must complete the program as a full-time student. We do not offer a part-time option.
Can the Butler PA Program be completed virtually?
No, all students must complete the Butler PA Program in-person on-campus.
What scholarships does Butler University offer for PA Students?
Butler University does not offer any scholarships for PA students. We encourage students to consider state/national scholarships that can be found here.
Does the Butler PA Program offer any type of advanced placement for didactic or clinical courses?
No, all students must complete all aspects of the Butler University PA didactic and experiential curriculum.
How many applications do you receive each year?
For the past few years, we have received between 500-600 applications that meet all requirements to be considered for admission.
Do you have rolling admission?
No, the Butler PA Program does not have rolling admission. Candidates are all considered after the July 15 deadline. Interviews are then conducted between September-November.
Is a supplemental application and/or fee required?
No, candidates do not need to submit a supplemental application or fee. Candidates must complete the CASPA application by the July 15 deadline.
Do you give preference to in-state applicants?
No, as a private institution we do not give preference to in-state applicants. The tuition for our in-state and out-of-state students is the same.
What can count as Direct Patient Care Experience or Healthcare Experience and how many hours are required to apply?
For the Butler University PA Program, there is not a set number of hours required for Direct Patient Care Experience or Healthcare Experience, so the PA Admission Committee does not have a preference what type of experience a candidate secures. The PA Admission Committee seeks candidates who have been able to truly discern that becoming a PA is the career path they desire to pursue. Direct patient care and healthcare experience are some of the best avenues to assist candidates with this discernment.
Can Biochemistry fulfill my 300 level or higher chemistry prerequisite?
Yes, if the Biochemistry course is listed at the 300 level or higher it can be utilized to fulfill this prerequisite. It does not matter if the course subject is listed as Chemistry, Biology, or Biochemistry.
Can Organic Chemistry II fulfill my 300 level or higher chemistry prerequisite?
Yes, if the Organic Chemistry II course is listed at the 300 level or higher at the institution where you complete the course it can be utilized to fulfill this prerequisite.
Do I need to complete a lab to fulfill the 300 level or higher chemistry prerequisite?
No, a lab is not required to fulfill this prerequisite.
Can a course satisfy more than one prerequisite?
No, completed courses can only be utilized to fulfill one prerequisite.
Do you accept courses and labs completed online or at a community college to fulfill prerequisites?
Yes, we accept prerequisites and labs from any regionally accredited institution, including online and community colleges.
Can any prerequisites be outstanding at the time of application?
Yes, candidates may have three outstanding prerequisites at the time of application. Only one of these prerequisites can be a chemistry or biology-related prerequisite.
Is there a date when completed courses expire and cannot be utilized to fulfill prerequisites?
No, there is no expiration date on prerequisite courses.
I have completed AP or IB courses, can they be utilized to fulfill prerequisites?
Applicants can use up AP or IB scores to fulfill no more than two prerequisites. Applicants must have earned a score of a 4 or 5 on AP exams or a score of a 5 to 7 on IB exams. Official AP or IB exam results must be submitted to Butler University (College Board Code 1073).
Can Medical Terminology be utilized to fulfill one of the five 200 level or higher biology-related course prerequisites?
No, medical terminology cannot be utilized to fulfill one of the five 200 level or higher biology-related courses. Even though Medical Terminology is not a required course for our program, students may find it helpful in preparation for the required Medical Terminology quiz that all admitted students must pass prior to matriculation.
Can the MCAT be utilized instead of the GRE?
No, all applicants to the Butler University PA Program must take the GRE.
Do GRE scores expire?
GRE scores are only good for five years from the date the test was completed.
Is the PACAT required?
No, the Butler University PA Admission Committee does not require applicants to complete the PACAT exam.
Is CASPER required?
No, the Butler University PA Admission Committee does not require applicants to complete CASPER.
