Join the Collective for our third Canvas & Wine event. Faculty will have the opportunity to attend sessions led by CAT academic technology specialists and instructional designers. In the past, Canvas & Wine sessions focused on beginner-level skills. This year, sessions will run the gamut from beginner to advanced.

In addition to attending the CAT-led sessions, faculty can drop by information tables of the other Collective members, enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres and liquid refreshments, and get personal help at the Ask a Consultant! table.

Vintner’s Reserve Sessions

These 40-minute sessions will go into detail on the topics at hand. Faculty will come away with practical tips to implement right away in their spring courses.

Filtering & Clarifying Your Course: Best Practices for Syllabus, Modules, and Assignments

Students will share their perspectives via video on what Canvas practices help them learn best. Based on this student feedback, we will transition to Canvas beginner skills like uploading your syllabus, organizing content into modules, and setting up assignments.

4:00 PM


Fast Fermintation: Gradebook Setup for Student Success

This training will cover how to setup your gradebook for maximum success. Topics covered include general gradebook setup and gradebook options, weighted grading setup, and gradebook import and export.

4:50 PM


Preparing for a Smooth Finish: Grading, Feedback, and Rubrics

This session will offer tips for grading, adding feedback, and using rubrics within Canvas, with an emphasis on workload management and meaningful assessment practices.

Perfect Pairings Sessions

These 20-minute sessions will give you a taste of more advanced features in Canvas. Many sessions will be introductions to tools rather than a complete step-by-step workshop.

Corking Your Content: Cleaning Up Your Course Import

3:10 PM—Copying forward your Canvas course semester-to-semester creates lots of unneeded files. This training will cover best practices on cleaning up all your unused and unneeded files.

From Aging to Bottling: Using Canvas Templates to Provide an Engaging Vessel for Your Course Content

3:30 PM—Help your students maximize the use of their cognitive bandwidth while interacting with your course content. Come and learn how to use templates developed to display your course content in an organized and engaging manner to help focus students’ cognitive load on learning your course content.

Improve Your Craft with Ally

4:00 PM—Ally is an accessibility tool that is integrated into all Butler Canvas courses. It automatically scans all course content and flags any accessibility issues it detects. It then provides steps for fixing the accessibility issues. Ally also converts course content into alternative formats for your students to download.

Tasting Notes: Social Annotation in Canvas with Hypothesis

4:20 PM—Learn about social annotation—what it is and why it’s valuable to learning. Attendees will leave with example assignments and example rubrics for grading and feedback.

Spice Up Your Course with Outcomes

4:50 PM—Outcomes is a feature in Canvas that allows instructors to track students’ progress towards desired course goals or outcomes. Outcomes can be aligned to quizzes or to assignments in the form of a rubric. When outcomes are used for grading, data is automatically compiled regarding student progress towards outcomes for instructors and students to view.

Novice or Sommelier: Using Mastery Paths for Differentiation

5:10 PM—Mastery Paths is a Canvas tool that allows for easy differentiation based on a quiz score. This training will cover how to setup and use the Mastery Paths tool.
