Science, Technology & Environmental Studies

Two programs addressing key challenges of the 21st century.

Butler’s Environmental Studies (ENV) program provides the tools to understand how people and societies depend upon and can help sustain our natural world.

Butler’s Science, Technology and Society (STS) program helps you understand how science and technology shape us and the world we live in, and how we can harness their power to make a better world.

Our faculty span the whole campus

Butler’s STES programs are collaborations between faculty in the sciences, social sciences and humanities. Many faculty in Butler’s professional colleges also do teaching and research in STES issues, and their professional perspective provides another valuable dimension to understanding science, technology, and the environment.

Meet Christine Slover, Class of ’22

My education in STES helped me explore ways sustainability connects to everything and everyone. My studies and opportunities through the Butler and Indianapolis communities, as well as communities I was honored to work with while studying abroad, push me to see the interrelatedness of the world even if it is not apparent at first.

Meet Marissa Byers, Class of ’18

My experience in the environmental studies program gave me a holistic view of the relationship between the human and more than human world that has influenced my work, both in my “day jobs” and in my work advocating for access to greenspace in support of mental health!
